Gary, this isn’t really Groundhog Day exactly if you are following the deals Little Kevie is trying to make. It’s Kevie and The Beanstalk except that Little Kevie’s beans do not have any magic.

After passing comprehensive laws on a wide range of issues with a similarly small House majority under Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) during the last Congress, the Democrats remain united behind Hakeem Jeffries. They have delivered 212 votes for him 11 times.

The contrast is stark.

Throughout the day, the allies of Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (CA) negotiated with the 20 extremists who refuse to back him, apparently offering them more and more power to win their votes. McCarthy has allegedly agreed to their demand that a single person can force a vote to get rid of the speaker, a demand that puts him at their mercy and that he had previously insisted he would never accept. He has also apparently offered members of the hard-right Freedom Caucus two spots on the House Rules Committee, which decides how measures will be presented to the House, and given them control over appropriations bills. He is also said to be considering letting them choose committee chairs, jumping over those with seniority.

This will not sit well with the rest of the conference. Lawyer and Washington Post columnist George Conway wrote, “I’m no political scientist, but it does strike me that a guy who negotiates by giving stuff up and and getting nothing in return probably wouldn’t make a good leader of a legislative body.”

This Speaker debacle is a living example of Einstein’s definition of insanity.

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

One thing for sure is that there will be a Speaker but no date on when there will be a Speaker. Maybe today or maybe tomorrow.

And another thing… Any bills that come up for a vote during a lame duck session of Congress should require a 2/3 majority to pass.

Gary, are you celebrating? Isn’t this what you have been pushing for the last 10 years?

Like the dozens of votes to repeal Obamacare, right?

You and the Alt-Reich can pat yourselves on rhe back for the U.S. reaching this level of incompetence, Mr. Varvel.

Hahahahahaha! Republicans are lying traitors and losers.

It’s Groundhog Day for the Republicans: proving they lack the capacity, will, or even desire to govern. It’s all about power, creating a “brand” they can leverage into political power or personal economic advantage, and no desire to actually serve a constituency. Of course, the ultimate losers will be the American people.

OK, I actually thought this one was funny and not unintentionally. However, as Tibby says above, it’s not really going to end with the main character becoming a better person. Of course, “Mr. Smith goes to Washington” was a fantasy also.

Except that, in the movie, the main protagonist did eventually learn to stop the repeats by mending his habits…

Good job Gary; I know it wasn’t easy for you.

So, now that he’s “won”, I hope he takes a look around his cherished new office and remembers what might have happened, if Pelosi had not been in another part of the capitol when his leader’s troops showed up there two years ago.
