Wally: Joan-- Andy needs a job to pay back the money I loaned him. babysitting max defeats the purpose. Joan: How? Wally: We need someone else to pay him. Joan: I really don't see the difference. Andy, honey-- why don't you take Max to the pool?! Here's money for snacks. What?

I don’t see the difference, either. if you need a babysitter anywa, why not take someone you know (and, I suppose, trust)? Why should Andy be babysitting Max for free just because he is… hm… what is he anyway – a cousin-in-law?

If they cannot afford the phone on their budget and Joan had not planned on paying someone to take her money to go someplace fun… Joan and Wally paid for the phone and are now handing him more money rather than Max being in the backyard or the park or other free places where Andy isn’t watching the teen girls in theirs swimsuits

Simple solution - Andy could watch Max for free until he has “worked off” the cost of the phone.
