If a person loses the use of their legs, that does not imply that they’ve lost the use of their hands. The different parts of the body are affected individually.

Similarly, the brain is not homogeneous. Different functions are located in different places. In particular, the part(s) involved in reasoning are not in the same place as the parts involved in processing speech and printed text.

And strokes are also usually localized, affecting different parts of the brain differently, if at all. And since the part of the brain involved in processing sound is different from the part involved in processing images, we get what you see with Fetterman… a serious difficulty in understanding speech, while he can understand printed text. And he can respond to it verbally, since speaking is quite different from hearing… and also differently located.
