Indeed a lottery. Here, locally, we have a saying that goes something like: If you run the run of beasts, you won’t be having but your destined fortune.
When I was in high school I read an article on Horatio Alger. The author pointed out that in the Alger stories the plucky young man always got help from a random event like stopping the rich man’s daughter’s runaway carriage. Therefore blind luck is an important element in success.
