I’m strongly in favor of doing both (or many ) things. After all, there are considerably more (so far anyway) than one of us, so multi-tasking is easy.
By some estimates, we are 10,000 years overdue for an asteroid hit comparable to the one that wiped out the dinosaurs and gave our ancestral mammals the foothold they needed. It’s good to know we can do this.
Also, I am not one of those people who thinks improving Earth and exploring space are mutually exclusive – I think they are mutually reinforcing, if you do it right. And as an old space geek, it sure was cool!
Once again we’ve proven we can bomb any thing any where. Now the thing has to be monitored to see if it’s orbit around the big rock has changed and if so by how much?
For anyone who has not seen the movie Don’t Look Up, its on netflix and it is really a good movie. You really have to pay attention tho to all the things going on because some of the humor is really subtle. It deals with this same situation of an asteroid heading towards the earth
Go read the book “2312” by Kim Robinson and then try to tell us how useless this experiment is.
All knowledge is important. We won’t be stuck on this rock forever. If we want to be able to leave we need to be able to achieve accomplishments like this routinely.

And what good is launching an old Dodge into space against an asteroid anyway?

I wonder if this was a comment that the dinosaurs made, that they had better things to worry about instead of astroids?, Just asking./s

Actually, an asteroid is probably the strong dose of medicine needed.

Apparently we are better able to save ourselves from dangers in space than from the very real and increasingly urgent effects of climate change.

A pretty impressive shot by the folk at NASA.

Whenever I read about an asteroid that might take out human life on Earth I root for the asteroid

Climate change for example. Now there’s an immediate existential threat if ever there was one.
