When I wrote the president in the fall of 2001 I reminded him of the ultimate failures of the Soviet Union, Britain and even Alexander the Great when they attempted to militarily control Afghanistan. I suggested, although I didn’t use the phrase, that a short “shock & awe” targeted military campaign against the Taliban was best with the warning that this was only a taste of what we would do if you again harbor terrorists, hoping the threat would work. As history shows, Bush went another way.
