My neighbor had a golden retriever named Sophie. He would let her and her mates out of their pen late a night to run around and do their duty. I had a pair of slip-on loafers outside my door for use outside only. Well, most mornings I would go outside to slip into them and one would be gone. When I went to the pen where Sophie were kept during the day, there would be laying down and my slipper next to her.

It smelled like a bone…
