I caught kitten # 2, the gray one that looks like Mom (Annie) at around 8:30. But that last kitten, the black one, still has not been caught and it is now 12:30 a.m. I was hoping to catch it before I go to bed (which won’t be for a couple more hours). The kitten should be hungry by now, as there is no food for it except what is in the trap. Maybe I should add some Fancy Feast to the sardines I have in the trap. I did see the black kitten a few hours ago, but he or she saw me and backed away from the cat door to the garage. All is quiet in the upstairs bathroom where Annie and the other 2 kittens are. But if I go in there, I know they’ll duck and hide. I put a large cat carrier in there for them to hide in and I hung a sheet in the corner for them to hide behind. The cat carrier and the food and water bowls are hidden behind the sheet. I think that I heard kitten #1 (the tortoise shell) in the cat carrier when I brought #2 kitten in there, but I wasn’t about to peek. I want them to feel safe hiding in there.
Took the dogs on a little hike yesterday, our secret 1 mile 4 lake trail where we had the usual solitude for 3 hours, then a walk along a creek where I found Elephant Head orchids and several other beautiful shade loving wildflowers. Several areas were thick with mosquitos (the first trailhead is actually called Mosquito Flats!) but my herbal Badger Balm keeps them off me. Came home to surprising messages on FB that we had a big old bear in town at 3 am last night. With our horrible drought all the wildlife is exceptionally desperate for food. I contacted a bear expert in Mammoth regarding riding my bike around town in the middle of the night and he assured me that the bear will run the other way if I encounter it. We are lucky in the High Sierra that the bears are mostly nonchalant or afraid of us, even with their cubs. Maybe I’ll et lucky and see one!
I stayed up until 3:15 this morning and checked the trap before going to bed. No kitten. I woke up at 6:45 and dragged myself out of bed (I needed to use the bathroom anyway) and I checked the trap again and YES! I got the black kitten! I put that one in the bathroom with the others and went back to bed, finally able to sleep better because I could stop worrying. The black kitten I’ve seen out there has a little white spot on its chest. I could not see for certain that this kitten has that spot because it kept in a crouch and wouldn’t let me see it. I am very certain though that I have caught all the kittens. However, just to be on the safe side, I am going to reset the trap now and I will keep it set all day just in case there is a fourth kitten. Now all I have to do is figure out how to tame them. They are keeping well hidden in that bathroom, but at least I know that they are safe now.
Can’t say I blame her. Working with Chesney could drive anyone to drink. (Sorry if that sounds mean.) On another note, saw four butterflies, a spotted towhee, a Wilson’s warbler, a rabbit, and three robins while out walking today.
