Yea, well if employers paid wait staff a living wage, AND quit cheating them on their tips, maybe you could convince them to stay. The NRA (National Restaurant Association, not the Other One) in Florida (members like Disney, Red Lobster, etc) wanted to reduce base pay for wait staff to $2.15 an hour… oh, and voted down the need to lay them when they are out on sick leave. Minimum Wage has increased to $10.00 an hour, it for tipped staff, $6.68 with tips covering deficit.
One of the ironies — of the many — is that the very people complaining about not being able to get staff (at the low wages they want to pay) are the same people who complain about immigrants taking their jobs. If you really need those workers and are unwilling to pay a living wage, it’s funny that you so very much don’t want immigrants who have historically worked very hard for very little. (I am not encouraging exploitation of immigrant workers, merely noting the irony).
There’s a certain irony here when everyone is screaming about inflation while, at the same time, bemoaning that fact that service is a little slow at their favorite restaurant when they routinely go out to eat. And that irony is compounded when we whine about no one is wanting to work while the unemployment rate is at 3.6% and full employment is considered to be 4% to 5%. People obviously want to work. Bummer is, during the Covid interruption and work shutdowns, people explored new ideas and new opportunities rather than merely waiting for their old lives to return. They sought and found new work. Then to seal the deal we keep making it more difficult for low-skilled foreign workers to enter the labor force — workers that make our restaurants run — workers to get our crops harvested — and our hotel rooms to be cleaned — and our construction industry to be fully staffed — all while chanting “Build that wall. Build that wall.” Perhaps it’s time to tone down the anger and turn up the civility. Then, maybe, we can have an intelligent conversation about where we are and where we want to go and what wonderful array of people it will take to get us there.
Unemployment at 3.6%, 7.9 million jobs added the most in any year, US GDP 5.7% double the average, wages up 5.6%, deficit down $1.3 trillion, the most in any year.
This is what you get when the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and the regular business person cannot compete and provide decent pay for labor. I drive through so many dying small towns because people are moving off, dying off and selling off. Large corporations are buying up businesses and creating monopolies and the small businesses cannot compete. Then even small big businesses cannot compete with the bigger and they and their employees suffer.
Forced to get other jobs during Covid, waitstaff found out there are better jobs. Instead of fighting for the prime tipping hours, they are now finding themselves free to go out or relax on those days/evenings. Can you blame them for not wanting to go back. Then again, if more of those restaurants had put their government, don’t have to pay back loans into retaining staff, instead of building new restaurants, refurnishing new restaurants, there own pockets, perhaps they could have retained some of those workers.
Went to the U.S. Post Office last week. None of the staff at the front counter spoke English as their 1st language. Quite a change from just a few years ago. Go immigrants!
