Back in the 30s (I think), there was an old Betty Book cartoon with this exact premise. She was so sick of the noise in the big city that she took off for the country. All the (very different) noises there drove her to distraction. She ended up going back to the city where she was lulled to sleep by the jackhammers and car horns.
In the suburbs, mowers and leaf blowers are usually only noisy for minutes but city noises never stop. If you want nothing but concrete and asphalt live in a city but if you want greenery it needs tending, get over it!
We live 1/2 mile from the Garden State Parkway and we’re in the flight path for Newark airport. Oh, and we’re halfway between 2 train lines but the most noise comes from the crows, jays, sparrows, catbirds, squirrels, and doves who share our yard. :)
I will never understand people who rake up lawn clippings and leaves, place them in plastic bags and send them to the dump where they will never decompose. Meanwhile, they spend hundreds of dollars on fertilizer.
Gas operated leaf blowers are illegal to use in Washington DC!!!! I warn the contractors who come into the city twice. Third time I call the police and have them fined. City is willing to help small contractors replace the gas ops with battery or electrical ones.
We have neighbours on the east side who have a small fleet of pickup trucks. They love warming them up early in the morning. They make the garbage trucks sound like pikers.
OMG I so feel this one. The things I miss from being in the city are actually quite unexpected…. like not hearing gunshots regularly (live in a very rural area) and having plenty of hiking trails accessible…. and NO LEAFBLOWERS ALL DAY LONG!
