Well, Cynthia, there were also these things called books. You could keep as many as you liked in your house, and go to your local library for the rest. Granted, it took a little more effort. And if you were just looking for one isolated fact, you generally ended up learning a lot more while you were looking for it.
I recall the volumes of the 1963 Britannica we had when I was growing up, the dictionaries, the world atlas. And of course, all the books of history, philosophy, and science (most of which I admittedly didn’t read as a child).

Dictionary, Encyclopedia, other reference books. And, you could call the local Library with a question, they would do their best to answer it…
