Preferential treatment of white refugees from Ukraine over brown-skinned refugees from Latin America presenting themselves at official points of entry and seeking asylum is clearly racist.
While I want to make it clear that I absolutely DO support helping the Ukrainian refugees, because it is the right thing to do, it was not U.S. policy that put them in danger.
In contrast, it is the direct, extensive meddling by the U.S. in Latin America that destabilized governments in Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua (remember Iran-Contra?), Chile, Panama, Colombia and others. We literally toppled democratically-elected governments in several of those countries and installed military dictatorships that, in some cases, waged genocide against indigenous peoples such as the Maya that had once been the most advanced civilization of their time. (Reagan provided arms to right-wing strongman José Efraín Ríos Montt in Guatemala, despite CIA warnings of Montt’s record of genocidal massacres against indigenous Mayans for which he was later convicted of genocide).
Those seeking refuge from threats to their lives and safety that are the direct result of U.S. policies of destabilization and propping up military dictatorships that waged genocidal wars against mostly indigenous populations whose ancestors were there long before the arrival of brutal, barbaric European invaders and love their homelands. They only risk arduous travel to go to a country where they do not know the language or culture and are reviled by many there out of utter, extreme desperation.
Again, I do support helping Ukrainian refugees because it is the right thing to do, but I especially support aid and protection to Latin America refugees because WE OWE THEM. We broke it. We have no moral right to deny asylum to those fleeing the poverty, destabilization and violence that WE CAUSED.
I really don’t know what the problem is with the people coming to this country. They both want a better life for their kids. They both are fleeing persecution. Why should it matter what color their skin is.
That’s been the unofficial policy for years, it started with Chinese laborers that were brought in to work on the railroads, although then it was official policy.
Inaccurate. We are being told that racism is a rare individual aberration and assuredly not “systematic” (I hope I am not flagged for using a banned word).
“I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912 (where have I heard that name before?). I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested.” Excerpt from a speech delivered in 1933, by Major General Smedley Butler, USMC
There is a difference in the law between economic refugees and those seeking asylum from a war-torn country under invasion. I think some people fear Ukrainians will vote for republicans, so out comes the race card.
The Govt is looking at the situations behind their desire to come here. For the Hispanics, it’s not clearly a refugee situation, many of them just wanting a better life. For the Ukrainians, they are refugees from war. Many will want to stay, but once the war is over, they would ostensibly return to their homes in Ukraine.
What is more, is that we NEED those immigrant families to come and work in our country and become normalized citizens. We have a declining work force because US citizens are not having enough children to keep our working population from shrinking. We have 10 grandkids, healthy, well educated and productive, doing needed work. But out of all those we have only ONE great grandchild, and possibly one more to come. Let’s face it, our economy discourages young families having children. Other countries provide benefits for young families, but ours doesn’t help with child care, or family leave time, or other benefits to lift them out of poverty. Our tax policies certainly reflect our concern for the very wealthy, and profitable corporations who find ways to avoid paying taxes, but young families are on their own.
Thanks for reminding us of our racist policies. And we should all remember the millions of deaths and war crimes committed by our “forever” wars. And that includes systematic and approved government torture at Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, and CIA Black sites. We have thrown this down our memory hole, but we should remember that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and their lawyers were convicted of the illegal invasion of Iraq, goverment approved torture, the death of a million innocent citizens, and other war crimes by a tribunal of 5 judges in May 2012.
Whatever Russia is now doing pales in comparison to what we have done in our “forever” wars. To not remind us of this turns our media into a “war porn” factory.
Approximately 40% of legal immigrants each year coming in to the US come from Latin America. So far more Latin Americans are allowed in the county than Ukrainians. But I guess that just is not inflammatory enough.

No dogs though. Maybe if the dog was white. Wait, it was.

Sad but true.
Central American refugees should have as much right to seek asylum in the USA as any refugee.

As long as people continue to support and vote for the Republican Party and its ideals, this racial disparity will continue.

The Ukrainian woman was in clear and present danger to her life. The other may have been, or just seeking a way out of poverty.
