Larry “Bud” Melman was actually Calvert Grant DeForest. He became famous by his frequent appearances on the David Letterman show where he was hilariously subjected to all sorts of inane antics. Sadly, he passed away on March 19, 2007 at the age of 85.

The Larry Melman in the strip was born in 1926, while Calvert Grant DeForest aka Larry “Bud” Melman was born in 1921. Homonymy?
