Donald Trump has been accused of saying the “quiet part out loud” after suggesting Mike Pence should have “overturned the election” last January 6, but “unfortunately” failed to do so during his role as presiding officer of the Senate.
In a statement on Sunday night, Trump was denouncing bipartisan efforts to update the Electoral Count Act of 1887 to make it clear that a vice president doesn’t have the constitutional or legal power to prevent election results from being certified.
However, Trump interpreted the proposals as a way to prevent VPs from being able to change the outcome of the results, once again falsely suggesting Pence therefor had the power to do so.
“If the Vice President (Mike Pence) had ‘absolutely no right’ to change the Presidential Election results in the Senate, despite fraud and many other irregularities, how come the Democrats and RINO Republicans, like Wacky Susan Collins, are desperately trying to pass legislation that will not allow the Vice President to change the results of the election?” Trump said.
“Actually, what they are saying, is that Mike Pence did have the right to change the outcome, and they now want to take that right away. Unfortunately, he didn’t exercise that power, he could have overturned the Election!”
While the former president has been falsely claiming the 2020 Election was “rigged” against him for more than 14 months now, his latest statement was the first time that he has let slip that his voter fraud cries were part of intentions to completely overturn the results in his favor.
‘Massively Un-American’: Trump Gets Pummeled By Cheney and Kinzinger for Admitting He Wanted Pence to Overturn Election
Representatives Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) ripped into Donald Trump over the former president’s admission he wanted his 2020 election defeat overthrown.
Cheney and Kinzinger, the two Republican members of the January 6 House select committee, both took notice of Trump’s rhetoric, and they see it as proof he sought to undermine democracy.
Kinzinger called out Trump’s “admission” on Sunday night, condemning it as a “massively un-American statement” and saying the GOP has to make a choice between Trump or the Constitution.
“It is time for every Republican leader to pick a side,” Kinzinger said. “Trump or the Constitution, there is no middle on defending our nation anymore.”
On Monday, Cheney also called out Trump’s statement — plus comments made during his rally in Texas during which he offered to pardon his supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol if elected president again.
“Trump uses language he knows caused the Jan 6 violence; suggests he’d pardon the Jan 6 defendants, some of whom have been charged with seditious conspiracy; threatens prosecutors; and admits he was attempting to overturn the election,” Cheney wrote. “He’d do it all again if given the chance.”
George Conway Says Trump Is ‘Incriminating’ Himself: ‘Not a Smart Man’
“He just is incriminating himself with all of these statements,” Conway said of Trump, who said over the weekend that those charged for their participation in the deadly Capitol riot should be pardoned, and insisted, falsely, that former Vice President Mike Pence could have overturned the 2020 election results. “This is just absurd. He’s just not a smart man. He’s a very arrogant man. Sometimes, every so often, when it comes to his bad intent, he tells the truth. That’s what he’s telling here. He wanted this election to be overturned against the results, against the will of the people. He wanted to end constitutional democracy in the United States and he’s just out and admitting it now.”
Conway, who is married to Trump’s former top aide Kellyanne Conway, said “somebody really should read him his Miranda rights.” Conway said that in Trump saying outright he wanted the election overturned, the former president incriminated himself.
He added Trump is also “essentially threatening prosecutors in New York, the District of Columbia, and in Atlanta for basically doing their jobs to investigate things that he did.”
Trump, Conway concluded, “doesn’t care about the country,” but only cares about himself.
‘Free to do as you are told’: Florida Republicans advance wave of draconian bills
Proposals banning abortion, discussions of sexuality, and white racial ‘discomfort’ aim to establish Florida as capital of Trumpistan
I t has been a long and painful month in the Florida legislature for opponents of the state’s Trumpist governor Ron DeSantis and his loyal band of rightwing Republicans. A slew of bills has advanced attacking everything from diversity rights, abortion protections and free speech in schools, in addition to a proposal that would legally shield white people from feeling “discomfort” over the state’s racist past.
And last Wednesday, an anti-masker physician, hand picked by the governor and apathetic about the value of Covid-19 vaccines, was backed unanimously by a Republican senate panel as the next surgeon-general following a walk-out by Democratic politicians frustrated by Joseph Ladapo’s evasiveness.
To hear DeSantis tell it, the “freedom state” of Florida is merely following the will of a populist citizenry in defying the perceived tyranny of the federal government, determined to protect liberty in the face of a deadly pandemic that has claimed more than 64,000 of their fellow residents, and standing up against the “indoctrination” of children.
Yet as the possible 2024 presidential candidate presses ahead with turning Florida into what critics see as his own conservative fiefdom – a de facto Trumpistan of the south with an “Orwellian-sounding” election police force – DeSantis is finding opposition beginning to harden.
More of the state’s 21 million people, which elected him in 2018 by barely 32,000 votes, appears displeased at the creeping authoritarianism and is keen to show DeSantis – who will be seeking re-election in November – that Florida is not the solidly red state he believes it to be.
