I’ve begun wondering just what is the value of the Ukraine to Putin’s Russia? It’s true that the Ukraine was a longtime portion of greater Russia, and during Stalin’s era, Ukraine was their bread basket. But, what is Ukraine’s value for Russia now, other than just the historical connection? Wouldn’t adding the nation of Ukraine put a financial burden on the already strained Russian economy?
Vladimir’s dream since the collapse of the Soviet Union has been to rebuild it to all it’s Stalinist glory and more. Just as Trump has idolized Hitler so Putin has Stalin. In Putin’s case the Russian people have an almost unbroken history of being ruled by a single totalitarian leader for most of it’s history to the point where submission to one is just short of hard wired. Only in Ukraine and the former Warsaw pact nations where there have been other forms of governance is there an abiding contempt and hatred for anything remotely Russian. It was one of the reasons during WWII many sided with the Germans against the Soviets and that continues to this day.

Putin is too wedded to the Soviet way of handling things. He just cannot see another way of living.

I realize Valentine’s Day isn’t for a while yet, but shouldn’t there be an arrow through the heart of Putin’s card ?

There are a lot of historical Russian roots that go back into the “Ukraine”.

Elizabethans had a term for this sort of thing, “rough wooing”, which sounds better than “rape” I suppose.
