As a HS substitute teacher I was to confiscate phones and turn them into the office. One young man was visibly distressed over my taking his phone and he approached me several times during the class, it being a study hall, and asked for his phone. I eventually told him to see me after class. With a very stern look on my face, I handed the phone back to him saying “If you tell anyone I’ve given you this phone back, I’m going to tell everyone you were crying like a girl!” Never heard anything else about it and never caught him using his phone again.

There is absolutely no need for a student to be using a phone during a class.
