Once upon a time, the idea of parents protesting a scientist speaking at a school career day would have been comically absurd.

This is so understandable the way the term “science” and especially the phrase “following the science”, is so over-used, abused, and especially misused these days.

What’s interesting to me is how scientists are protested by people who claim to follow the science. It’s clearly not really about the science.

It all depends on whether he is a “scientist”, according to some tabloid journal, or an actual specialist in a field of scientific research or application. With wizards it doesn’t matter if they are “wizards” or just “crazy people”. :)

Some noted scientists have gone really “off the rails” with wild theories outside their realm of study. Dr. John Lilly is one example that comes to mind. His groundbreaking work in dolphin research was well-respected, did a mid-life switch to research into “consciousness”, starting studying psychedelic drugs and wound up convinced aliens were trying to kill him. I’ve read his books; it’s rather sad.

Taught HS Chemistry for 35 years. Every morning I’d sing “I’m off to be the wizard, the wonderful wizard of all.”

I bought a few design tshirts from an online biz in Ireland. Currently wearing a knife on the head Deadpool that says “I’m a unicorn!”. One of the shirts, not one of my choices, reads “Science is magic that works” in an image based font.

Timely. Sadly.

Yet more idiots who believe in YouTube, Facebook, et al instead of professionals with years of experience AND KNOWLEDGE to go with their qualifications.The world IS in peril if these fools get into positions of real power.Oh, wait. There’s dummies in the white house isn’t there?
