Thanks so much for this wonderful story Arc, Ms. Shepherd. Kudos to all my fellow veterans (including all of the animals that have served over the years). From me, all I can say is “You are welcome; it was my pleasure.”
We are grateful for the lifesaving and maybe freedom-saving heroics, but they get less popular when it’s acknowledged that sometimes those same people (not the birds) are on the dishing-out end of the bombs, “enemy fire” (it is to someone), etc. We have to keep telling ourselves that our side is always more humane than the Other. But many veterans are forever haunted by the dark shadow around the glory.
I missed this one on the day because I wasn’t expecting a new one until Saturday.
Thank you, Ms. T for honoring those who served. In WWII I had at least one family member in every branch of the service—Army, Navy, Marines, Army Air Corps (now known as Air Force) and Women’s Army Corps— also Coast Guard and the non military/ civilian Merchant Marines. All of them came home safely, though all have since passed.
