Since we’re discussing geographical names for children, I’ve a step-nephew named Zealand (no, he wasn’t born in the province of the Netherlands which in turn is the namesake of that New country in the South Pacific).

Dredges up an old, old memory – school days. I recall a short story by, perhaps, Mark Twain – where a boy was named after a city (I thought in Florida) that was cause of embarrassment as he grew up. Trying to google, but so far no luck. Anyone have a recollection of this story? – Cheers!

Nobody used Florence as a name for people until Florence Nightingale’s parents named her for the city where she was born in Italy. Her sister was named Parthenope.

Ah, Lincoln, Capital of Nebraska. By far the best city, can all we agree?
