She got what gymnasts call the twisties. It’s a real thing, and when you have them, you can’t do the maneuvers required safely. Rather than do a bad job, she stood aside, which enabled the team to give a stronger performance as a team. That takes a certain amount of emotional maturity to do what serves the group, not just oneself.
I’ve never been a good athlete, and in no way could compete on an Olympic level. But her decision makes sense. When somebody is pushing the limits of ability, and particularly when they are throwing their bodies around, they need to have confidence or they could get seriously injured. Ms. Biles does not owe us her health and safety just to satisfy our national pride.
Watching a baseball game the other day, I saw a batter get hit in the head by a pitch (unintentional). Even with a helmet, when they showed his face you could see that his eyes were unfocused and he likely had a concussion. Yet the coaches let him continue to play.
There is a far-too-long history of coaches providing pain killers including injections to enable the injured player to continue in the game. The history of concussions that resulted in dementia and other mental issues is appalling.
She is showing an impressive level of maturity. Now if both parties could muster even half that maturity we would not repeatedly be presented with a choice between Dumb and Dumber!
@Same2Ubuddy, tell you what. When you become the best gymnast IN THE WORLD, get FOUR moves named after you, overcoming sexual abuse and physical trauma to do so, then MAYBE you will be entitled to an opinion here.
Until then, shut it. You have nothing to offer. You have no opinion worth hearing. I’ll listen to the expert, thanks.

She owes nothing to anyone. If she isn’t ready to compete, that’s her call and no one else’s.

She is to be praised, not mocked. Hopefully she will earn gold on Tuesday
