I don’t know the conditions on other states, but here in the Hoosier state the DNR has recorded the peculiar deaths of songbirds in many counties. The cause is unknown, and under investigation, but the usual suspects such as avian flu and West Nile have been eliminated as causes. In the upshot, the DNR has requested that all backyard feeders be removed and sterilized with a 10% bleach solution. One layman (as opposed to an epidemiologist) has suggested a connection between the recent cicada emergence and this novel illness.
Although the virus is widespread everywhere in the U.S., so far it has only sickened and/or killed 39 million of us – little more than 10%. Most of the deaths come from the ranks of our oldest and weakest citizens. Except for the burdens of grief for the dead and care-taking, etc., 85% of us probably won’t be [physically] directly affected.
• About half of all Americans have been vaccinated, and half have not.
Do I have any civic / moral responsibilities towards protecting those still in danger?

Mary Mallon [Typhoid Mary] was an asymptomatic carrier of typhoid fever. From 1884 to 1914 she spread the disease all over New York. From 1915 until her death in 1938, she was involuntarily quarantined. American legal scholars are still debating whether the government had the Constitutional authority to restrain her actions.
Medical experts were unable to determine with 100% proof that she had spread the disease, although she did test positive, and every household she worked in did suffer outbreaks. No criminal charges were ever filed, and yet [eventually] she was forcibly detained.
• Mary Mallon should have been as free as any other law-abiding American citizen.

• The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
To you, does that mean that it’s OK if the few should be sacrificed, or does that mean that the many should protect itself from disease by any morally acceptable means?

“This man has killed more people with vaccine misinformation, he has supported extreme racism, he is a fascist and does more to rip this country apart than anyone that calls themselves an American,” he added.
