At least in fifth edition, ‘mage’ is not a Dungeons and Dragons character class, though ‘wizard’, ‘sorcerer’ and ‘warlock’ are each distinct types of spellcaster (deriving their abilities from study, their bloodline, or a pact, respectively.)In the related Pathfinder rules (in first edition), a ‘magus’ is a sort of warrior-caster, able to wear heavier armor than a wizard without risking spell failure and wield a weapon in one hand and spells in another.

You mean I could have found a DM’s Guide and Player’s Handbook in most public libraries when I was growing up?
Why did I never think of trying that path instead of dropping 3 or 400 bucks when you factor in AD&D, West End Star Wars and MERP?
