I was in San Francisco a long time ago and, at least at the time, CA must have had a death penalty on driving through cross walks when someone was in them. Otherwise aggressive drivers would come screeching to a halt if you even looked at a cross walk.
My friend and I watched an elderly (probably 70s or 80s) Chinese man start to enter a cross walk and a car tried to sneak through before he got to the other side. The man literally ran out in front of the car, started banging on the guy’s hood, yelling at him in Chinese. My friend and I just laughed. I was impressed by how quickly the guy could move.
Just before visiting Los Angeles, I was told by a (native) friend, “There are two rules of the road here. 1) The pedestrian owns the road. 2) He should be willing to ‘sell’ it on a moment’s notice.”
