I eventually wound up as an electrical engineer. However as a teen practicing the craft I often blew the fuses (remember them) in the house while working on some of my projects.
I also learned how well the human body conducts electricity and soon learned to provide an alternate and easier path to ground. When it comes to electrical circuits, “getting into your work” isn’t a good idea.
One day after winding up in the dark in the basement once again, I went upstairs. I looked out the window and told my parents that it wasn’t me. The whole block was out.
It was November 9th, 1965 – AKA the Northeast Power Blackout. Fortunately, the experts blamed it on some relay in Ontario. I got away with that one.
The neighbors had an annual visit from the vacuum truck to clear out the coal ash from their furnace. It is interesting to find a home with a coal chute and see what they have done with that space.
I was puzzled when I found a six foot piece of lumber in our basement rec room. It took some time before I noticed a hole in the wall that lined up with my radial arm saw on the far side of the basement. If the home reno guy says, “Can I use your saw?” say “NO!”

Well, if his chimney ended right up against the bottom of the upper floor; I’d think it is a mess down there by now!
