Back in the late 70’s, I tooled around Seattle on my 10 speed, and often I’d nod in passing to someone I’d never meet, tooling around on his unicycle going in another direction. A custom unicycle, made by local bike shop owner and framemaker Angel Rodreguiez. He’d nod back, because cyclists in those days would do that, and I hoped to meet him one day in one of the dozen coffee shops that had suddenly sprung up in the city. Riding around a hilly city on one wheel with no gears was pretty amazing, and I wanted to meet this amazing guy. But instead, he graduated from the U of Wash with a degree in engineering, and went to Nicaragua to help a people in distress, in many tasks including helping to build a small dam for hydropower. But he was murdered by the contras in a raid, men funded illegally by rogue officials in the White House, officals who would be pardoned by an offical at the center of the plan, Bush the Elder after he’d become President and lost his re-election bid. The madness of the last few years isn’t the making of one selfish man, it’s just the latest chapter.
