The Treaty of Versailles and the way Germany was treated after the war were major contributing factors. The lack of British and French backbones during the 1930s also helped.
As a first generation American, it was very interesting to get my parent’s perspective on WW 2 since they were in their 20’s in England in an area that got a lot of bombs.
Grandpa is wearing his cap remembering CV5, the Yorktown, famous for it’s actions in the battles of the Coral Sea, and Midway where it was sunk after its planes helped sink the four Japanese carriers that bombed Pearl Harbor. The Japanese navy still did a lot of damage to the US and our allies, Australia and New Zealand navies around Guadalcanal, but after their disaster at Midway, and the loss of their experienced pilots, they were on the losing side. They never again had the initiative in the Pacific air war. Little known fact: more US Navy sailors and officers died securing Guadalcanal than US Marines. Former US Marine. Semper Fidelis. Vote Blue!
and therein lies the Trump supporter , e.g. only he and Trump know all the answers, mendacious in that America never errs while their service to America fictional from the git-go.

Mom’s spot on. And unfortunately, politics actually enters into the discussion about which texts to use, what facts are suppressed and how much of the awful lot of (ahem) whitewash is applied. And of course, there’s the “teach to the test” effect which both reduces the amount of time spent on any given subject, but also reduces the scope of allowable discussion about history.

He also means that the winners write the history books. You often don’t know who the winners are until a long time after the events.
People who later bring up inconvenient facts are often known as “revisionists”.

WWII was started in late December 1941 when the Japs invaded America’s ocean. All that stuff over in Europe was really none of our concern.

Go ahead honey, be sure to ask him about the Tuskegee Airmen that saved his butt when he flew in a B-17 over Germany. He keeps forgetting.
