That’s my lab! We set up a squirrel play area (I know, I am bored being locked down) and Frankie sits in the yard and watched them. Never barks and I think he wants to play with them.
I love it when you see to animals interacting and one is not playing “by the rules.” We had a large rabbit that we let run loose in our back yard. We would feed her by hand and she would come to us and let us pet her. A friend of the family had a large German shepherd that loved to chase her and I don’t think it was just for fun on the dog’s part. The rabbit would lead that dog all over the yard, around the trees and the shed. If the dog started to tire, the rabbit would slow down until the dog caught it’s breath and then take off again. If the rabbit got tired, it would dive into it’s hole under the shed (concrete floor for the shed). The dog would dig madly, but just couldn’t get it. It was funny to watch. The dog never had a chance.
