Sadly, that isn’t unheard of for birds to do.

Mockingbirds always use butts in their nests. It’s believed residual nicotine repels parasites.

Hey smokers – field-strip it then pocket the filter. Stop littering the street!

At least their habitat is well insulated. And if the poison contained therein is a protection for them, even better.

When I see a butt fly out a car window at a stop light, I always wish I had the nerve to pick it up and throw it back in their car.

Violation of local zoning laws. In addition to that particular nest material, they ban Gomez Addams’ cousin, and any of your parent’s sisters. In other words, no Its, aunts, or butts.

I read somewhere that crows will sometimes take lit smokes and run them through their feathers to get rid of insects. Don’t know if it’s true, but I remember seeing a video of it. :)

One of the truly fine effects of fewer smokers (and more of them vaping): Hardly any butts scattered around except near “smoking spots”. That bird worked HARD to make that nest!
