National Institutes of Health director Francis Collins testified under oath last week at a Senate hearing that the Abbott rapid test had a 15 percent false negative rate.
The Abbott rapid test missed about 25 percent of positives compared with a slower Abbott test, according to a study published April 23 in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology.
The Abbott rapid test, which is supposed to determine in five to 13 minutes whether a person has the virus, missed a third of the positive samples found by the diagnostic company Cepheid when both tests used nasopharyngeal swabs, said the study done by a group from New York University.
Abbott denial Wednesday: “It’s unclear if the samples were tested correctly in this study. Abbott has distributed about 1.8 million ID NOW tests and the reported rate of false negatives to Abbott is at 0.02 percent, and in communications with the users of the test, it is performing as expected.”
The White House was shaken last week as staffers tested positive for the virus, and four officials who have been tested said they were using only the Abbott rapid test model. Not only are we far, far behind on testing – the tests that The White House promotes & uses are junk.

This is the danger of metaphorical thinking: It’s helpful only up to the point where the metaphor and the reality have differences. To hammer it home (as Marty has done, but in words): We are not soldiers and expending our lives does not protect the nation. Probably doesn’t even protect business, but that’s a different issue. And so, accepting “just a few more deaths” is neither moral nor necessary.
