When the current pandemic’s scope is mentioned as biggest or worst it always recalls the small pox pandemic’s impact on native Americans. European ships would return to find entire villages were simply gone.
Looked Noem up out of curiosity. Her claim to fame is that her family was hurt by the estate tax when her father died in an accident on the family farm in 1994. She is still telling that story today as a reason to eliminate the inheritance tax, despite all of the reforms that have happened to the tax since 1994, many of them specifically enacted to protect family farms and businesses.
These are just checkpoints and most stops are under 30 seconds and basically 1. making sure obviously sick people aren’t coming into the reservation and 2. telling people that do not live on the reservation-not to stop-just pass through. These simple to precautions should not offend anyone. I think this governor is just trying to get her name known to Republicans nationwide in effort to move up (job wise) to the federal level.
The Indians are smart to have these checkpoints and they are only coming and going off of tribal land this GOP slag is just kissing up to Trump attempting to rush to open the economy before the virus runs its course.
Aren’t those tribes recognized by United States treaties as independent nations?
The federal government may be able to revoke a treaty (by declaring war?), but individual states have no authority of any sort over the tribes, not any more than Minnesota has standing to “sue” Canada to force it to open its borders.

She does have the proper Trumpian neckwear – very chic, very western.

Remember, the Governor’s mindset is “It’s Our Country! After all, we stole it fair and square!”

I wonder how many people will get this? That, once upon a time, the white man gave smallpox-infested blankets to Native Americans. Here we go again.
