Transcript:
Tia Carmen: Baldo, I don't like you eating that nasty fast food! Tia Carmen: Here... Tia Carmen: Have some of my homemade tripas and seso con lengua de res soup!
If you don’t know what it is, and it’s seasoned so it’s tasty, and the texture doesn’t automatically make you gag — don’t ask; you don’t want to know. Just enjoy it.
George, just stare at the words a little while. “tripas” reminded me of “tripe” which I know is some awful organ meat from somewhere. And “Lengua” reminds me of “Language” and we obviously use our tongues to talk. Also, my grandmother used to adore cold tongue sandwiches. Gag. Now, if there’s a third thing in there, I can’t tell, but just the one is bad enough for me!
Sesos is cow brains. Tripas is the tube that connects the cow’s 2 stomaches. Lengua de Res is Beef Tongue. Therefore what Baldo will be enjoying is cow brains and intestines with beef tongue soup. Yum, yum!!!

Did someone address why it’s been all black and white this week?
Thought I don’t speak Spanish, I did catch the “tongue” part. That would probably be enough for me right there.

I’m glad it’s in Spanish…I don’t trust it.

Should soup go “plop” on a plate?

For me, Carmen’s cooking IS Fast Food. It’s the food I’d want around me if I were trying to fast.

It’s a farm country poverty thing. You sold the good parts to the rich folks to pay the rent & ate what was left. Tongue takes a lot of tenderizing.
natashalee about 13 years ago
That’s right Chuklitl and every culture and country has or had their version of it.

Beef tongue doesn’t really need that much tenderizing. All you need is a pressure cooker.

Bad strip today. When a reader has no idea what is being said by the characters, it’s a loser. 3-panel stories demand 100% clarity, start to end.

I must admit that’s a really thick soup, looks more like a stew.
