   I’ve been a fan of HOTC for a long time and was a little concerned when Heart went from being a funny little girl to a more worldly school girl, grown up enough to audition for a school play. But Mark Tatulli has done and is doing a great job with the transition. Mark, I wonder what you would have done with Peanuts? It’s pretty much impossible to imagine what Charlie Brown and the gang would be doing and saying as they grew up.

   When “Nancy” changed, my immediate reaction was negative but I gave it awhile. But I had to bail completely on it. Nancy was no longer really Nancy—she was a totally different personality. The original strip should have been retired and a 100% new strip, different name, different characters (same ages would be OK) should have launched.

   So, the new year with a maturing Heart has already started—and it’s looking good so far!

   I dunno….still getting used to this “older” Heart. Kind of surprised she didn’t stay the little girl she always was until the start of this school year. Will the humor still be as good as it always has been in her “little girlhood” or is it new story time a little sooner than it has been in the past strips? still good, for sure, but a different recipe, so to speak.

   Only 50? Seemed like 6 months! I’m living the 60’s and 50’s during the day…and unless there’s lots to shovel later, I’ll STILL be smiling wide in December and January!

   What’s wrong with following the Calvin and Hobbes route? The cartoonist decides to end the strip, does so with class, and that’s IT. Then let a new cartoonist start a new strip with new characters of her or his choice and her or his own sense of humor. And just like a new tv show, after whatever is determined to be the “right” length of time, it either swims or sinks.

   I’m outta here. The month-long trial I decided on to decide on whether the strip is worth reading is over…and the answer came to me in an unexpected flash when I wasn’t even thinking about it today. I’ve leaving because….it’s not Nancy.

   And this is simple and straightforward. For a looong time, I got to know Nancy and the other characters in the strip because of the way Guy Gilchrist wrote the jokes and drew the strip. I liked the bright (some may call them garish) colors and the whole “world” that Nancy and Sluggo inhabited for years.

   And then what happened? Nancy ended and a NEW strip began. The setting, the sense of humor, the art style—-it is ALL different except for the names of the main characters. If they were drawn as different people with different names, I think I’d be very open to reading what truly is an entirely new strip. But there is NOTHING except the drawings and the held-over names.

   And that simply does not work. That’s the problem we’ve all been arguing over since the new strip started. I’ll check it again in six months or so to see how it goes….although I suspect it’ll still be the same thing then as I’m describing now.

   For those of you who love it now—hang in there and enjoy it. For anyone who shares my ideas, “put it on the shelf” and come back in 6 months and check it out then.

   Wow, interesting to see how the bigots respond to a simple comment! I MEANT what I said about Sluggo’s hair, and that has NOTHING to do with a bias. In this strip it looks like he has some disease, NOT a bad haircut, and certainly NOTHING that has to do with racism. There’s nothing wrong with expecting a comic strip character to look the same in every strip…or have you never read any other strips?

    Today’s rating: a mild ha-ha but the graphic style still leaves much to desired. Ten more days to see if this customer keeps buying or leaves the store.
