I’ve got 3 here, with 2 chihuahuas sleeping on my bed with me and a Blue Heeler on the floor next to the bed. The little one’s were originally my late mother’s. The larger dog belonged to my late best friend. I adopted them all.
Our coonhounds are rescues. I guess that shouldn’t be a surprise since I’m heavily involved in coonhound rescue. The Great Dane pictured to the left was a rescue as well. Her name was “Toots”. Dog rescue is the most satisfying thing I’ve ever done.
Gibbs is a rescue dog. He is a lab/hound mix. I cal him my BBD (big black dog). He is the most loving dog I have ever had. My husband wanted to adopt him after our Golden retriever Clayton died. He has bonded with me and won’t hardly let me out of his sight. Gary will do if I am not at home, but I am his person. We also have Niblet. She was my mom and step-dad’s dog. He passed away in November and she came to be our girl. Adopt! Don’t shop!
I am loving reading about everyones rescue dogs! As a foster mum, I get them coming to me in all sorts of condition and sometimes (like last time) I Foster Failed.
Rescues are the best and sadly, so many designer breeds end up in a shelter.
Once people go back to work and school, how many of the animals that were adopted during this mess will end up back in the shelter or just simply abandoned on the side of the road? People don’t seem to understand that that commitment is for the life of that pet, not the convenience of the owner.
Way back in February 2002, I saw an ad for free Shephard mix puppies, who were born on Christmas Day 2001, in the local paper. We had just bought our house, after rental living for 10 years, and could finally get a dog, so I called the number and got directions. We went out to the farm where the pups were, and my husband wanted to take the one girl they still had, but one of the pups crawled out from under the porch, walked right up to us, and sat on my feet. I knew he was the one. From the moment we brought him home, he was the perfect dog. He had only one accident in the house, and that was the day we brought him home. He was my companion, my best boy, and my snuggle dog. He let my children crawl all over him, got along with everybody, and we used to say if you gave him a cookie he’d probably let you rob us blind. He would put his head on my lap when I was sad, “protect” me from the robins that lived in the tree outside my window, and sleep on the floor next to the bed at night, keeping my slippers warm. He could catch the tiniest dog treats, but not a tennis ball. He was deathly afraid of thunder but loved rock and roll. He was the greatest dog ever. He died on April 6, 2016, and I still miss him terribly.
We’ve since rescued 3 other dogs, a pitbull/lab mix, a pitbull/coonhound mix/ and a greyhound/whippet mix. The latter two are sleeping under my desk right now because it’s thundering, the former one we lost last July to a vindictive neighbor who poisoned her because she chased his dog off our property (that’s a long story and this is too long already). Suffice it to say, I will always adopt a rescue over buying a designer dog. And if I could, I’d take more than 2 or 3 at a time.

My Border Collie Shilo is a rescue dog. He is the most loving loyal friendly funny best friend I could ever hope to have. I love him so much. ☺♥
