Well, there were candles and lanterns and the moon and the stars and flashlights – oops – nope – flashlights came later.

    Today is:

    National Spinach Day

    Epilepsy Awareness Day

National Nougat Day. I was wondering what type of nougat they were talking about, so I looked deeper into that one and this is what it said:

“National Nougat Day is observed each year on March 26th. This food holiday is in celebration of a soft and chewy or sometimes hard and crunchy candy.Break open the center of certain candy bars and you will find a nougat center.Made by whipping egg whites together and adding honey or sugar, roasted nuts, and sometimes candied fruit, some say nougat has been a sweet treat since ancient Rome. Enjoyed both as a candy all on its own or paired with chocolate or other flavorings.Recipes range from the more traditional nougat made with almonds and honey to those with hints of citrus. In Italy, they call it torrone. In Spain, a nougat is called turrón. The United States has a version made with corn syrup called divinity.

Three basic kinds of nougats include:

    1. White nougat – made with beaten egg whites and honey.2. Brown nougat – made without egg whites and has a firmer, often crunchy texture.3. Viennese or German nougat – chocolate and nut praline

In the United States, modern candy bar makers use a different recipe than the traditional nougat. Today they make of a mixture of sucrose and corn syrup aerated with a whipping agent such as egg white or hydrolyzed soy protein or gelatin. It is the preferred and often used ingredient of large candy companies because it is inexpensive to make and used as a filler.

Varieties of nougat are found in:3 Musketeers, Mars, Snickers, Milky Way, Zero, Salted Nut Rolls, Reese’s Fast Break, Reese’s Whipps, Baby Ruth, and others.

Funny- I never thought of divinity as a type of nougat. I love that stuff, but only make it for Christmas. And I also love 3 Musketeers, Milky Way and Snickers candy bars.

Who’s ever relative that is, your greatgreatgreatgreat grandma had an idea…. the first ( and last) cat to do so. From then on cats only thought of eating, sleeping, the 3AM crazies and the occasional amorous “ get-together”

I thought I had a smudge on the bi-focal part of my glasses… nope, the “transition lens” coating is de laminating. Looks like a smear of Vaseline looking out. And OF COURSE I can’t get it fixed now! Sigh…

I heard disturbing news at work yesterday. I was told that the former co-worker, Missy, who died recently tested positive for coronavirus. I can’t say for certain it’s true, but it came from a pretty reliable source. Missy’s roommate, who was taking care of her for the 2 weeks she was sick, was in the store on Tuesday night (I’m glad I wasn’t). If Missy had it, her roommate was exposed a great deal and then she came in our store – is that crazy or what? By the way, Missy no longer worked in our store and had not worked there since way back last summer (or maybe it was longer ago than that). But every now and then, she shopped there. I had not seen her in months. Meanwhile, yesterday, another co-worker went home early because she was sick. She was going to go and get tested.

On another note, I saw a bunch of geese swimming in a flooded farm field as I drove to work yesterday. That field never dried out after the August 2018 flood. It looks like a shallow lake now and the geese love it. I also saw an awful lot of traffic while on my way to work. Nobody ever would have guessed we were under “shelter in place” orders. The store was pretty busy with people buying things they really don’t need (like large screen TV’s), but maybe a little less busy that we’ve been recently.

From yesterday’s comments to daleandkristen – Lovebug has more ups and downs than a roller coaster. She has me halfway to full blown insanity. Every time I start thinking “This is it – she isn’t going to get better this time” and I think it’s time to make an appointment with the vet to end it all, she rallies back. I don’t do anything differently that would make her rally. She just gets better. When she’s well, she’s so loving and so happy, I feel relieved that I didn’t end it. Even when she’s down, I have not yet gotten the feeling that she’s ready to go, because she usually at least makes an attempt to eat. Sadly, she is on a down right now. She barely touched her food tonight and she isn’t getting out of her bed. I’m once again back to thinking I’m going to have to let her go, but I’m still not convinced that’s what she wants. It’s really tearing me apart, wanting to do what’s best for her and still not being able to figure out what that is. Every time I get the idea it’s time to end it, she gets better and every time I think she’s going to be okay after all, she takes a turn for the worse again. I really don’t know what to do or how much longer I can stand this. And now with this coronavirus thing, they aren’t letting clients in the vet’s office for now. If I should decide on euthanasia, I’m afraid I’d have to have them take her from me and I’d have to wait outside while they do the deed and I’d have to wait for them to return to me with my dead kitty. I want to be with her at the end once I do have to go with euthanasia (as I expect to have to do – likely this year). It’s eating me up inside.

Sorry for the long response _ I’m having a tough time dealing with stuff right now.

Edison did NOT invent the electric light. By the time he began work, there were already over 50 patents filed. The ONLY thing Edison did was use a super-fine re-coiled wire of tungsten as the filament.

I have 8 brothers. One of them, Jim, is the Sports Director for WTAP-TV, the local NBC affiliate. Due to overwork and illness (not Covid-19), they are down to one reporter, one weatherman, and Jim to cover the 6 and 11 news. So Jim is now an anchorman!

Mary’s comment yesterday about yellow or “waxed beans” brought back memories of cafeteria food in the Catholic grade school in the 1950’s. We had yellow beans and canned government “mystery meat” all the time. I still shudder at the memory. To this day, I can’t eat waxed beans.

How many cats does it take change a light bulb? None. We can see in the dark. If we need a light bulb changed, we’ll just meow in the dark until someone comes along and changes the bulb just to find out what the heck we’re talking about.

That kitty has a bright idea. Once again, today’s comic is brilliant. On another note, saw a rabbit, a chickadee, a robin, and a towhee while out walking today. I also heard some geese and some Pacific tree frogs.

Last night a raccoon picked (by hand) all the suet out of its holder. It was everywhere! Some in the bird bath…some on the rail and a lot on the deck. Today a small flock of Brown Headed Cowbirds, ate the suet from the deck and apparently found it quite tasty. I’ve never seen one of them actually eating the suet from its holder.
