“There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations. We keep on turning and making new combinations indefinitely; but they are the same old pieces of colored glass that have been in use through all the ages.”― Mark Twain
Or, even further back, in the words of Solomon;“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”― Ecclesiastes 1:9
There is no such thing as a “new joke”. The jokes are basically the same ones told from ancient days with only the names, places, events modified to match modern tastes. The essence of the humor is the same.
If you run out of ideas, you can always fall back on stranded on the deserted island, Humpty Dumpty, looking for water in the desert, Mr. Potato Head, antics in the doctor’s office, bedroom, kitchen, etc…..there’s a million of them. And if all else fails, there’s always politics ~~ heaven forbid!
If your comic is going to be a slice of life sort of thing, make sure you have a slice of cake with that cup. Coffee cake works best in the morning. I like carrot cake with my morning tea. Chocolate is better after luncheon.
She gives far too much credit to readers for good memories and emotional health. I’m good with variations on a theme. We’re actually a bit needy out here, to be honest. Keep ‘em rollin’!
Recycling is a good thing, right? When the subject comes from your unique point of view, it’s new again! Plus, literature/art are like food and water. We always need a new supply. We want there to be a lot of farmers and wells even if (especially because) they produce the same stuff year after year.
If you’ve run out of ideas, then take a vacation and run some of the comics from Sherpa, the site that will never be fixed. You take care of yourself first. You do not worry about us. We are last on the list. We’ll be there when you get back.
