Cleats by Bill Hinds for September 09, 2022
Transcript:
Mom: Okay, Peri, if you have to have these expensive soccer shoes, the money is going to come out of your allowance. Peri: That's not fair. Mom: It's more than fair. You have a perfectly good pair of cleats at home. This is a luxury buy. Peri: Well, what if something happened to my old shoes - like if the dog ate them? Mom: If you want these, you're paying for them. And I better not catch you rubbing pork chops on your old shoes. Peri: Mom! Do you know how much these shoes cost?!

Peri, we can’t always have what we want and when we feel like we can, it makes us ungrateful for what we already have. In other words, don’t be a spoiled brat.

My Dad did that to me on a $35 pair of red suede Converse All Stars (early 1970’s) that my Freshman Basketball coach wanted us to wear. I paid for them from my lawn mowing money.

My parents left me to pay for all my new school clothes starting in 8th grade. Wife and I did the same to our 4 kids. They had jobs, so they bought their own school clothes. And no they did not get an “allowance” they had chores, but did not get paid for doing them. The 2 daughters who have kids old enough(older than 10) are doing the same. Our kids learned very quickly not to whine and demand we buy them stuff when we took them shopping. (We simply told them no and took them back home. 1 parent stayed home while the other parent went back and continued shopping)

Everything is more expensive in one’s own money than someone else’s.
