One Christmas when I was about 12, I gave my father a pair of bookends. He didn’t like them, but forgot who gave them to him, and gave them to me two years later. The next year I gave them to him for a Father’s Day present. Now he got it, and I got them back 2 or 3 years later as a birthday gift. After I moved away, I mailed them back to him for his birthday 5 years later. Cleaning out the house after he died, I found them rewrapped with Christmas wrapping paper and my name on the gift tag.
