The virtual end of the draft is one of the greatest advances in American freedom of my long lifetime. Don’t let them try to revive it! A free country does not need to defend itself by enslaving its citizens.
A couple of observations. Again, Red is too short to be 10 years old. His head does not even come up to his dad’s waist. Now, this strip is set in 1970. Assuming his father is now about 35, he would have been born in 1935. Too young both for WWII and Korea. As for Vietnam, the first draft lottery was in 1969 by which time, Red’s father would have been 34. Don’t see how he could have been drafted under any circumstances.
My Dad volunteered after he got word of how the Chinese were influencing/infiltrating the fight in Vietnam and got there in time for Operation Jacknife.

I find it hard to say happy in regards to Veterans Day. A lot of our boys and men and women never made it back.

How old is Red’s dad? There hasn’t been a military draft for centuries.

I like dogs, but I’m allergic to dog saliva. My eyes would be puffed out for sure!

Doesn’t Red have an Uncle Jimmy who gave his life in the military?

The USA hasn’t fought in a war for defense since 1945.
