Fact-checking the things you hear is still easier than fact-checking the things you say.

My favourite bit of fact checking comes from Australian idiot site politifact, who in 2013 awarded their coveted “pants on fire” rating to a politician claiming government departments had who had spent ~$100,000 on coffee machines had been “buying gold-plated coffee machines for their growing public service workforce.” since, of course, the coffee machines weren’t literally gold plated.

They’ve since taken the story down so here’s the wayback machine link:

    https://web.archive.org/web/20130517214431/http://politifact.com.au/truth-o-meter/statements/2013/may/16/jamie-briggs/liberal-party-says-public-servants-buying-gold-pla/

Note for American readers: the Liberal/National Party coalition in Australia are the main conservative parties who have since drifted to the far right, while Labor are nominally left wing but are actually centre right. Other people may of course disagree with this categorisation, and they have every right to be wrong if they want.
