Never heard honesty referred to as the gay virtue (and I was an adult in 1983). When I Googled it, I didn’t get any references to it, but did find this gem:
“Honesty is a virtue, but being a bitch is a crutch for low self-esteem.”
Hey, all – I just looked up Gay Virtue; we were ALL wrong. It refers to the virtue of honesty as set forth by John Gay, the 18th Century philosopher. Great one, Johnny! All these years later and you GOT us.
Honestly, I learn so much reading the comments. I was just going to say “What an unfortunate choice of words,” but the readers here are not being rude about this at all. So refreshing.

I don’t think she understands the term “millinery”. It has nothing to do with putting someone through a mill.

Of course, in 1963 the word “gay” primarily meant happy and carefree. The secondary meaning then is the primary meaning now. Don we now?

Answering questions like this and “does this dress make me look fat?” are landmines and should be avoided.
