The other motivation is thinking that you know what’s right for everyone and forcing them to conform to your idea of how they should look, speak, act and think.
One is used to justify the other, vis-a-vis religion/greed – i.e., the tithe, which is what was used to justify the building of huge cathedrals, vast armies, and various empires, from which more of the tithe was extracted, at times by force, for the ‘Glory’ of any number of things, driven by mythology and superstition. Religion even explains its own fear and weakness by the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden for eating from the tree of – KNOWLEDGE. Those who worked to establish and promote a religion knew that whoever achieved ‘knowing’ – the ancient greek word was ‘science’ – would be weakened in their ‘need’ for mythology and superstition to explain the ‘unknowable’ aspects of the world, for they had reason and facts to replace ‘faith’, the unquestioning acceptance of the myths as what was ‘true’.
