One of the problems with the way things are right now: PACs and others may spend unlimited money on advertisements that the candidate and her supporters cannot control. Which means that, if I wanted to, I could form a group of liberals, collect money, and spend it on airing a video of the pee-resident being showered with his golden dreams. With a well known celebrity. And you wouldn’t be able to tell that it wasn’t an actual video. And you wouldn’t be able to find out who had made it, nor who had paid to make it available to view.
Of course, I agre with Morin’s intent: I don’t have to do that, he does it to himself. But I could … and that’s a problem.
I totally disagree with the SCOTUS about their ruling that a company is a person…or however it’s worded. I was shocked they can feel that way! It screwed everything up!
It’s sort of amazing and frightening to see how much of the wealth and effort of the nation is devoted to advertisements of all sorts. The media are supported by advertising revenue, the elections are dominated by advertising revenue, products (pharmeceuticals, for instance) have massive ad programs, and on it goes. Just how does all this advertising increase the wealth and well-being of the country? Does it count as a product? You sure can’t eat it or wear it or be sheltered by it.
Zuckerberg is trying to convince Congress that he should be allowed to start a cryptocurrency but he tries to dance around the issue of Facebook allowing out-and-out lies in political advertising. As AOC suggested, she could put out ads that say that Repubs voted for the Green New Deal, and Zuckerberg said they would “probably” be allowed.

The Russians already have anti-Biden ads and pro-Trump ads on Facebook.

Trump and Facebook, together… and miraculously, the encounter leaves both more evil than they were before.
