Actually, it will be a “behind the scenes” deal in which the Taliban offers some corporate mineral rights to a mega-corporation, and then we’ll allow the Taliban to oppress all they want, with an occasional mealy mouthed condemnation without action. Just like everywhere else in the world.
Afghanistan is like Wyoming — with at least one gun for every man, woman, and child — along with having the god obsession and a fierce independent streak.
The Taliban obviously has some support in Afghanistan, as do many other native factions. Properly supported, the United Nations could engage all sides in negotiations and stop the killing.
U.S. troops should only be deployed as part of U.N. peacekeeping missions — preferably in countries we haven’t invaded.
The Taliban was the reigning political party that governed Afghanistan and gave the terrorist group al Qaeda safe harbor and support. They refused to allow al Qaeda to be attacked. That was the reason we went in and overthrew the Taliban with most of the world’s support, including most people in the Middle East.
If it’s good enough for winning college teams it ought to be good enough for diplomats, right? Not that the Taliban has diplomats per se. Or the US, anymore, much.

Given Afghanistan’s proximity to Russia and China I have my doubts the US will ever completely vacate the region.
