We were working in the yard and my brother discovered eggs. “Turtle eggs!”
He brought them in, put them in a jar beside the refrigerator in the kitchen/dining room.
About a dozen snakes one morning. Not turtles at all. We took them to school, had the science teacher identify them, non poisonous, turned them loose.
