If Mr. Trump wants to purchase it with his own funds, not taxpayer dollars, let him leave the White House first. His mastery of the “Art of the Deal” seems to have deserted him in Washington.
Maybe T rump thinks that he can become absolute dictator of at least one country i. e. Greenland … after he renames it trumplandia. The Danes should counter with an offer to buy Porto Rico. They would get a Caribbean island with great sandy beaches – a little bit of Denmark to visit during the cold Baltic winters. The current residents of PR would get health care, good education, have a new language to learn, and get the secrets on how to make excellent Danish Pastries. The Greenlanders can be left alone. The President loses an island that hates him – everybody wins bigly.
Nitwit-in-Chief is hoping to drive Greenland into bankruptcy so that the Trump Empire can buy the island for pennies as the newest Trumplicaville resort. ):
Greenland is not “real estate”… no more than the nation of the United States is.
There was a time when nations — or large portions thereof — were bought and sold… and stolen. There was also a time when people were openly bought and sold. Neither is any longer considered justifiable, at least not by the United States and other “Western” nations.
And selling a “nation” is not at all like buying the individual houses and yards from the individual residents. It would in fact also be selling the people. (I wish I didn’t have to point that out separately, but I suspect that few readers here have yet thought in such terms.)
So Trump’s proposal is — among other things — a proposal to formally revive slavery.
The Greenlanders and Danes are not just ridiculing the idea. They are seriously calling it “insane”, and even “frightening”. And with good reason.
For more than half a century, the US has had great cooperation with Greenland and Denmark in the (mutual) realm of defense. Now Trump claims that that can’t continue unless he (he may say “the US”, but he really means “Donald Trump”) owns Greenland.
Donald Trump doesn’t believe in cooperation. As he so vividly demonstrated with his “reality” show, he believes that there should be only one “winner” and that all others should be designated as “losers”. He would rather see something good destroyed than see it based on cooperation or equality.
