Seeing as how Medicare for All would be paid for taxes that would replace existing insurance premiums and would see huge savings from eliminating giant salaries of senior health insurance executives and the health insurance industry’s profit margin, I fail to see why we couldn’t have single payer health insurance and a balanced budget at the same time. Even without all the cost savings M4A would provide, reversing some of the GOP tax cuts and cutting out all the bloat and waste from the enormous military budget would do the trick.
It’s sad to see Morin falling for the horror story fantasy, when he could just look around and see lots of countries with good universal health insurance systems.
This cartoon is a load of crap. The worst part is the suggestion that Medicare (for all) will break the bank. That’s happening now without M4A.
I wish supporters of Medicare For All would start talking about the insurance industry tax. But maybe people would be perfectly comfortable giving twice as much money to the Insurance-Medical Complex as they would pay in (horrors!) taxes.
Never met a campaign promise I liked. They’re all lies because the audience needs a nuance free presentation. We have the government we deserve. I’m for chocolate milk and high end whiskey in the drinking fountains.
There seem to be a lot of people with this reaction to “M4A” proposals. None however go on to offer a discussion of what’s so terribly, horribly wrong with the actual Medicare?
Is it a fairy tale? Is it bankrupting the treasury? Are people suffering and dying from untreated conditions? Is it profoundly unpopular?
I seem to remember that a certain person who accidentally became our president made a colossal boo-boo by publicly sympathizing with the Brits for their “awful” National Health Service (the brainchild of Winston Churchill, one of Trumpo’s gods). Quite an uproar followed.
Note: Medicare does have one glaring fault, the legal prohibition of the government from bargaining over drug prices. Gotta keep Big Pharma happy, and devil take the cost. (The Veterans Administration can bargain, and does, with great savings for both the Administration and their clients.)
Having just come back from Canada visiting a sick friend, I find this comic to be complete BS. Medicare for all would relieve some of my fears for my friends and family. While in Canada, over and over I heard Canadians asking me “what is wrong with folks down there?” and “We’re worried about you down there.” While they know their system has its faults, they sure as heck don’t want our for-profit health insurance system.
Read the plans that Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and others have put on their websites. Sure some things are aspirational, but we need to push for better things and we won’t get there by doing what we’ve always done or just giving up.
Back in the 80s I thought we should have a national health plan. Everyone would be a member. Premiums would be paid directly to the health plan, not the treasury. Companies could pay their employees premiums. We choose the person in charge. Every charge, including medicine, is negotiated by the plan representing the entire population of the USA. How about those who can’t afford the premium? That is a separate problem. Paying for medical care for the poor is very expensive now. Certainly it would be less expensive to cover the premium for the plan.
I think the problem here, is to think about the ramifications I’ve reshaping a large percentage of the economy, savings offsets would be disturbed by the massive layoffs of destroying an entire industry.
Bernie’s kind of intense, yes. But Warren’s great: She does have a plan for that; and it’s a thoughtful plan that treats our citizens as well as our corporations (at least) and has actual numbers in it showing how we can afford it without running up the debt.

It’s only a fairy tale if we continue to give power of attorney to the Republicans.

We can do it. It’s a question of priorities, and plugging up the tax loopholes for corporations and millionaires.

We can go to the moon. We can build 14 billion dollar aircraft carriers. We can pay for universal healthcare.

That is certainly a scary story for conservatives.

Actually there are more pressing needs that need attention.

Just give everyday Americans access to the same health care system enjoyed by members of Congress.

Bernie and Liz forgot to mention that that the winner will have to provide a “Pot For All” slush fund.

We could do it, but Republicans want to plunge us all into a racist horror story.

Not the best caricature of Sanders. Nice job on Warren.

Why do conservatives always act like scared little girls when they get told stories about how great America could be?
