The decision on gerrymandering is disgraceful. And the reason for the decision comes down to " Well, the Constitution doesn’t say we CAN’T do it". What a sad day for the U.S., that our highest court explicitly denies its citizens of a fair and impartial vote.
Gerrymandering seemed to call for a logical extension of Reynolds v. Sims. If votes (and citizens) are devalued by unequally populated districts, then the same occurs when one party is herded into congressional district boundaries to reduce their competitiveness in neighboring districts marginally favoring the other party. Human greed will always result in fudged lines. And Democrats suffer when their voters are concentrated in cities. But lines that clearly defy cultural, social, geographic, etc. boundaries should be reviewable by the courts.
Otherwise, we force the Democrats to be as ruthless as Republicans have been to work to diminish the voice of the minority. This kind of take no prisoners mentality exacerbates our divisions.
