I’m trying to figure out how the ladder was setup before he fell backwards. It looks like the base is past the base of the house. That would work if he was past the edge of the house, but that would imply that the ladder was leaning against air before it fell backwards.

The base of the ladder has to be far enough out to keep the center of gravity back of the of the ladder as you go up.
