Some people climb the ladder because they want to control other people, some just because they want to lord it over others, and some just to get higher pay. (That last is less common than it was when I was young, because many employers have taken to giving bigger titles as a substitute for giving bigger salaries.)
When my father was told that the only way he could get a raise in pay was to take a management position (which they offered him), he quit and found another job. He only wanted to do a good technical job and wanted no part of bossing other people.
When I joined the company where I worked as a engineer for 30 years I was told that there were two ways to advance in the company. One was to go into management, and the other was to advance in engineering. At least while I was working there the company truly did offer advancement in both areas. I stayed out of management and enjoyed more freedom in what I did; others may have enjoyed more control over projects but had less satisfaction from their engineering skills. I have no regrets.

At my last regular job there was no ladder. I had to work there about a week before I figured that out.
