Squirrels can be fascinating to watch, no matter how pesky they become. On one feeder, the outside cage drops down when a squirrel tries to use the perches as paw holds. This feeder frustrates every squirrel – except one. A wiley beast – nicknamed Nutso – would make a hard jump to spin the feeder, then kick off to spin it more. Seed flew out of the ports. Nutso then went to ground and hoovered up the goodies. Have not seen another squirrel to that, so I guess Nutso did not pass its genes to a younger generation, thank goodness. However, its cleverness also helped the larger ground feeding birds, who can’t use the perches. Brought us more bird life to enjoy.
micromos, store mine in a metal trash can also. Had to put a cinder block on top because the raccoons would lift the lid off. Caught one inside and he just looked at me and kept eating as if to say “thanx”.
We found a great way to defeat them. We put the feeder on a wire that was threaded through PVC tube on each side of the feeder. The squirrels couldn’t get footing on the PVC tube as it would spin when they tried to walk on it. Never had a squirrel problem, but we did have to mount it high enough to keep it out of the bears reach. This was at my ex GF’s place in Northern Michigan.

So….Use wire next time. Squirrels teeth are sharp and tough. But not wire cutting tough.

Should have hung it with electric fence wire… turned on (just remember to use an insulator between the wire and the bird feeder..)
